| The Leicestershire Environmental Protection Group (LEPG) is a recently formed amalgamation of communities and individuals, who are all concerned about the quality of our local environment. This open group has no political or commercial aims, but does have real worries over the increasing pressure being exerted on the local environment by commercial enterprises. These enterprises often have little appreciation, or concern, regarding the impact their developments have at a local level. Words such as “environmentally friendly” or “green” or “renewable”, are all too frequently used by such commercial bodies to mask the real impact of their proposed or established developments. These words may divert the unwary from really analysing the consequences of such developments, and this applies equally to both individuals and the planning authorities. For these reasons, the LEPG has emerged in a spontaneous manner, with the intention of exposing any inconsistencies between commercial messages with their promotional spin, and the real day to day effects they may have on the local environment. Locally, small and seemingly inoffensive changes, may have a profound impact on our living conditions. This can cover a wide range of issues, from adverse effects on wildlife, to increased air pollution and unsustainable traffic volumes. The LEPG is an entirely neutral organisation, and will actively support and advance genuinely environmentally positive activities. Equally it will endeavour to expose activities that are in reality environmentally detrimental. A good local environment requires constant vigilance at a local level ! |
